Many problems in the health and environmental sciences have an important statistical component.
Consumer products are tested to ensure that they do not pose significant risks to human health or the environment. If these studies are not correctly designed and analyzed, the resulting misinformation can bring an unacceptably risky product to market, or cause a good product to be abandoned.
News stories claiming health effects from exposures to everything from drugs to air pollutants are commonplace. How good is the science behind these claims? Careful quantitative evaluation of the claims in question is an important step in making such judgements.
In litigation attorneys assert that past occupational exposure is the cause of present disease. Here too statistical analysis of occupational epidemiology data together with quantitative modeling of the likely health risks of a specific individual exposure history can play an important role in resolving the question of causation.
Cleanup costs for environmental contamination problems are determined by the estimates of the level and extent of contamination. Companies want to be a good environmental citizens, but should not spend large sums to address overstated problems. The statistical components of this issue range from evaluation of the site sampling plan and subsequent analysis of toxicant concentration data, to critiquing the modeling done to characterize site risks.
